Butte County officials on Friday confirmed a bird flu outbreak in a backyard poultry flock, the latest case since Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in December.

The Butte County Department of Public Health identified a single case of bird flu, H5N1, in a non-commercial backyard poultry flock. An early-morning release from the department Friday did not specify where in Butte County the outbreak occurred.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources says about 40-50 snow geese have tested presumptive positive for bird flu at the Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge in Milton, Sussex County.

About a week after the highly contagious and potentially devastating bird flu was detected in snow geese at Delaware's Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, the virus has reached the Delmarva poultry industry.
