In the wake of the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, Muslim community leaders in North Texas are condemning the violence and extremist beliefs that may have motivated the suspect. Many say they are bracing for the Islamophobic backlash they have often experienced following acts of violence by people with ties to Islam.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texan who once served in Afghanistan, had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, but acted alone in the attack that killed at least 14 people, the FBI said.
