( NewsNation) — Nevada voters have approved a ballot measure to protect the right to an abortion in the state constitution. This is the first step toward enshrining abortion rights in Nevada. Voters will need to approve the proposal again in 2026 to amend the state constitution.

Abortion-rights measures passed in 7 states and have failed in at least 1 thus far, as voters in nearly a dozen states were asked to decide whether reproductive rights should be guaranteed. A record 10 states had abortion rights measures on their ballots this year in response to restrictions and bans on reproductive rights across the country.

The Associated Press has declared Democratic Rep. Dina Titus the winner in her race for reelection to the U.S. House.
