New York Attorney General Letitia James. Black and brown adults and students across New York — including middle schoolers — have been the targets of anonymous "racist text messages," the state attorney general announced Thursday.

Grand Prairie NAACP President Angela Luckey said in the last 24 hours, parents of kids attending historically Black colleges have contacted her, concerned about racist text messages they're receiving.

"It feels very much like a regression period," one student said. "Two steps forward, 10 steps backward, is what comes to mind."

The texts being reported in multiple states, including South Carolina, refer to students as 'selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation'

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is calling racist text messages targeting Black residents in Maryland and several other states "horrific" and "unacceptable."
