SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers fired defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen after just one disappointing season, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move hadn’t been announced.

The 49ers continued to change their coaching staff on Tuesday by removing Nick Sorensen from his post as defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. San Francisco would like to keep Sorensen on head coach Kyle Shanahan’s staff for next season but in a different role.

Sorensen spent just one season as the 49ers defensive coordinator after the team fired Steve Wilks last season. The 49ers ranked eighth in defensive yards, but allowed the fourth most points in the NFL. The 49ers struggled especially in the fourth quarter, being outscored by 52 points in the final frame.

Among the leaders in APY (average per year) are Dallas’ Dak Prescott ($60 million), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55 million) and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million). Purdy has more value to the 49ers than all of those players.
