A severe thunderstorm warning was released by the NWS Raleigh NC on Monday at 7:21 p.m. in effect until 7:45 p.m. The warning is for Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Wake counties.

The warning is in effect until 6:15 p.m. Lightning strikes the United States about 25 million times a year. Most of the strikes occur in the summer, killing 20 people each year, according to the NWS. Chance of lightning increases as a thunderstorm approaches and peaks when the storm is overhead. It diminishes as the storm moves away.

New Jersey residents can expect muggy and unsettled weather through Tuesday with intermittent showers followed by the threat of severe thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday. Scattered showers and mist will continue Monday evening and Tuesday.

On Monday at 7:14 p.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC in effect until 8 p.m. for Mecklenburg County.
