The Weeknd made his surprise return to the 2025 Grammy Awards stage on Sunday (Feb. 2) with an electric performance of "Cry for Me" and "Timeless" featuring an assist from his upcoming tourmate Playboi Carti.

"Because of the secret committees," the Weeknd later told the New York Times, "I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys," referencing the industry people and artists who vote on the nominees.

The Weeknd made a shocking return to the Grammys several years after he famously called out the Recording Academy. On Sunday night, February 2, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. took the stage during the 2025 Grammy Awards to announce that the organization has made peace with Abel Tesfaye nearly four years after he boycotted the awards show.
