There are two main symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome. The first is a painful rash, often with blisters, in and around one ear.

Initial diagnosis is based on the hallmark symptoms. The doctor takes a medical history and asks questions about previous infection (chicken pox). Laboratory test results can confirm the condition.
