The Niger State Government has announced its decision to take over the cost of treatment of all the injured victims of Saturday’s Fuel Tanker explosion in the state as a humanitarian gesture.

The death toll in last Saturday's tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara local government area of Niger state has increased to 86 people as some of the injured victims died while receiving treatment.

Such incidents are common in Niger State. On 8 September 2024, more than 50 travellers died in a midnight tanker explosion along the Agaie-Badeggi road. In 2022, another petrol-laden tanker exploded at Badeggi village near Bida. Although there were no casualties from the incident, the fire gutted two other vehicles.

The death toll from a weekend fuel truck blast in Nigeria has reached 98 after more bodies were recovered from the wreckage on Monday, the head of the regional emergency agency said, adding 69 people were receiving treatment in hospital.
