UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgent need for increased aid to the Gaza Strip. He warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with critical shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel.
U.N. officials say many people in Gaza are experiencing "famine-like conditions." Health experts who have studied past famines warn that the fallout can reverberate across generations.
"In August and September, there are probably still going to be ... large numbers of deaths because children have already passed the tipping point," Mark Brauner, who volunteered in Gaza last month, told HuffPost.
Almost one in three people in Gaza are going days without eating, the UN's food aid programme has warned. "Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment," the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement to news agency AFP.
The territory's Hamas-run health ministry said another 14 people died as a result of malnutrition over the past 24 hours.
