Micheal Martin has received the backing of the Irish parliament to become the country’s next Taoiseach. TDs voted 95 to 76 in support of the nomination of the Fianna Fail leader, one day after a chaotic row disrupted the process and resulted in the suspension of the Dail.
By 11.30, the Dáil was suspended after non-government parties angrily protested their opposition to the Independent TDs’ speaking time. Almost half an hour later, the Dáil resumed and so did the chaos, with opposition TDs calling on the Ceann Comhairle to share the legal advice she received in relation to the speaking-time row.
